Spiritual Leadership

This book has twenty-two chapters covering a wide variety of leadership topics in short format. It’s a primer on spiritual leadership. We are always amazed at the depth of wisdom that Sanders packed into these short chapters (an average of eight pages). It is an easy read and lends its content to start thoughtful and challenging discussions on who we should be as spiritual leaders. Spiritual Leadership includes reflection questions at the end of each chapter and a small group study guide at the back of the book both of which we use as a starting point for review.

Given that many of the disciples have yet to lead, we find most of the learning is preparation for the future leadership in God’s work. However, most of the principles apply immediately at work and home.

We read the book over four weeks and review each week’s reading the following week. Here is our reading plan:

• Week 1 : Chapters 1-6
• Week 2 : Chapters 7-11
• Week 3 : Chapters 12-16
• Week 4 : Chapters 16-End

During review, our goal is to create thought vacuums starting with the reflection or study guide questions included in the book. Our approach is simple, we ask the room, chapter by chapter, what they learned, highlighted, etc. and follow the discussion. We make calls to application and action along the way based on their comments and circumstances. We are intentional about guiding disciples to tell us how these principles apply not only in ministry but in life outside the church at work, home, and play.
